Thornhollow Valley
Woodland shoulders, working paddocks and a valley floor that holds the morning mist.
Thornhollow is a farmed valley of about nine kilometres with a stream at the bottom and woodland on the shoulders. The buildings were nearly all agricultural until the 1990s, and a handful of new houses have since been built on the footprints they left behind.
New work here succeeds or fails on one decision: whether it is honest about being new. The houses that read well keep a clear line between the stone they inherited and whatever was set on top of it.
What to know
Heating
Most valley properties are off the gas network. Ground-source and modern biomass are both common; ask for two winters of consumption data.
Access
Several lanes are unadopted. Confirm who maintains the surface before exchanging.
