A timber-shaded house in the valley, glazed the full width of its garden front
Thornhollow House was completed in 2020 on the site of the mill barn that stood here, and it borrows the barn's footprint and nothing else. The garden front is glazed the full width of the living level, and the roof is carried out over it far enough that the glass is in shade from late morning.
The upper floor is wrapped on its west face in a timber brise-soleil, which is what the house is known for locally: closed it reads as a solid timber box above a stone base, and from inside it is a screen rather than a wall. Below it the stone-clad base grounds the building into the slope.
The pool sits on the garden side under a slatted pergola, far enough from the house that the living level looks over it rather than at it. The land is 1.2 hectares of paddock and a wooded shoulder, with a right of way along the stream.
